7 Twisted Horror Movies About Social Media

7 Twisted Horror Movies That Demonstrated The Dark Side Of Social Media

Following the large success of Meelah Adams and Erdal Ceylan’s Selfie From Hell, I had a think about the modern horror movies that use social media as a instrument for terror. In the noughties era of tech, it was phones (One Missed Call), television (Ring), games (Stay Alive) and reality shows (My Little Eye) that were out to get us. Since 2010, social media is the newest killer on the block.

Check out seven horror movies since two thousand ten that have shown just how dark and deadly the world of social media can be.

1. Megan Is Missing

Main Social Media Featured: Talk room

Two teenage women embark talking with a fellow online. They think he’s only a little older than they are, and the bolder of the two friends goes out to meet him. She never comes back. Then her friend goes looking for her and finds answers best left alone. Warning: Earnestly disturbing.

Two. Smiley

Main Social Media Featured: Chatroulette

Smiley is an urban legend; a dude with a horribly mutilated face who "did it for the lulz." A remarkably effective slasher with a striking villain for millennial horror fans.

Trio. Antisocial

Main Social Media Featured: Facebook, a.k.a. "Social Redroom"

When zombies hit, a bunch of kids have nothing but social media at arm to communicate with each other — and attempt to find a way out of the gut-guzzlin’ hell their school has become.

Four. The Den

Main Social Media Featured: Chatroulette, a.k.a. "The Den"

What starts as an academic examine about the influence of talk programs on communication becomes a fight for life when some gravely weird shit starts going down online. Solidly creepy via and a standout in the tech-centric/found-footage horror genre.

Five. #Horror

Main Social Media Featured: Instagram, interactive social games

The most stylish and artsy of all social media horrors, Tara Subkoff’s #Horror goes after a group of 12-year-old women addicted to a social media game that turns bitching into a competitive sport. When the women are left alone one night in an isolated house, cyberbullying leads to madness and murder.

6. Unfriended

Main Social Media Featured: Facebook, Skype, Instagram

The ordinary and brilliant thing about Unfriended is that it’s like looking at a computer screen. As the characters flick inbetween different programs such as Skype and Spotify, we see events unfold in real time as they do, on screen and online. What could have been nothing more than a clever way of bypassing budget problems shone in a clever, taut little horror movie, and the surprise hit of 2015.

7. Ratter

Main Social Media Featured: Skype/FaceTime

Pretty Little Liars‘s Ashley Benson has a much, much worse time than she did in Rosewood as she moves to NYC and is stalked by a creepy dude with above-average hacking abilities. Infiltrating her webcam and social media apps, he’s able to worm his way into her files, her life and eventually, her apartment. Steel yourself for the ending.

Pst! Do you choose dishing the scares rather than receiving them? Then why not come in Movie Pilot’s fright-astic competition in partnership with Crypt TV!
