Social Networking and Socializing with your Samsung Galaxy S III

Before texting (see Chapter 7, “Text and Multimedia Messaging”) became popular, people relied on dedicated talk programs to conduct online conversations. Many of those same programs are now available as Android apps. Unlike texting, talk messages carry no per-message surcharge and there’s no limit to the number of messages that can be exchanged in a billing cycle.

Albeit Google Talk is preinstalled on the Galaxy S III, you can use it to talk only with other Google/Gmail users. As an example of a general talk program with a broader audience, the rest of the chapter shows you how to use imo, a free download from Play Store/Google Play. (Downloading apps is explained in Chapter 11, “Installing and Using Applications.”) You can use imo to talk with friends who have an account on any of a dozen popular talk services, such as Yahoo! Messenger, AIM/ICQ, MSN, and Facebook.

Another Talk Option: ChatON

ChatON, Samsung’s dedicated talk service, is preinstalled on your Galaxy S III. (Owners of other Android phones can download ChatON from Play Store/Google Play.) Unlike imo, ChatON can only be used to talk with other ChatON users. ChatON has a clean, text message–style talk interface and includes many interesting features, such as group talks, animated emoticons, and support for file attachments. All you have to do is coax your friends that they need yet another dedicated talk service/app if they want to talk with you.

About imo Instant Messenger

The Android version of imo enables you to talk with mates who use any of the following talk services: Microsoft Messenger, Skype, Yahoo! Messenger, Google Talk, Facebook, AIM/ICQ, Jabber, MySpace, Hyves, and VKontakte. Unlike most talk services, imo doesn’t require you to very first create a separate account. While talking, you can optionally record and send brief audio clips, too.

Setting Up imo: Very first Launch

After downloading and installing imo, you need to register the existing talk accounts that you want to use, determine which accounts you want to link together (for simultaneous sign-on), and review the Preferences settings.

  1. On the Home screen, tap Apps and then tap imo.

Optional: To switch your current Availability (preventing others from requesting talks while you’re setting up imo, for example), tap the text beside your picture placeholder on the Contacts tab and select an option from the menu that shows up.

Setting Your Availability

imo remembers your most latest Availability setting the next time you launch the app. To sign in as Invisible, choose it before you log out.

Unlinking a Linked Account

Linking originally treats all accounts as a single linked group. You can selectively unlink certain accounts by tapping the account name on the Me tab and then tapping Unlink Account in the dialog box that shows up. You can still by hand sign in to the unlinked accounts whenever you like by dragging its slider. (Note that you can also eliminate a selected account from imo by tapping Delete.)

Embarking a Talk

Either you or a friend can initiate a talk, but you must both be logged into the same service, such as Yahoo! Messenger. It doesn’t matter whether you’re both using imo, whether you’re directly connected to the talk service with its dedicated application, or whether you’re using different types of devices (computer, phone, or tablet, for example).

  1. Launch imo, tap the Me tab, and ensure that you’re signed in to the desired service(s).

About Signing In and Out

If some or all of your talk accounts are linked, the act of signing in to any linked account automatically signs you in to all linked accounts. The Me screen always shows a green slider for each account to which you’re signed in. To by hand sign in to or out of an account, haul the account’s slider to the correct position.

Responding to a Fresh Message

When imo is running on your phone, you can react to incoming messages.

  1. The other person sees that you’re online and available for talk, and then messages you—or he or she simply sends you a message, hoping that you’re online. If imo is onscreen, a fresh message notification (1 Fresh) emerges on the Talk tab. Tap the notification, and then tap the message text to participate in a talk. Alternatively, you can tap the X to discard the message.

Fresh Message Notifications

Depending on your Notifications Preferences, the LED lights, an alert tone sounds, the phone vibes, and/or an indicator emerges in the status bar.

>>>Go Further: imo Talk Options and Tips

There’s more to imo than its convenient treating of talk session and pals from numerous services. You may find the following options and tips helpful. For more information about imo and its capabilities, visit https://imo.im/features.

  • If you don’t feel like being interrupted, you canset your Availability to Away or Busy—but the best option is to select Invisible. In that mode, you can still receive incoming messages but no one can tell you’re online.
  • In addition to selecting an Availability setting, you can add a Status message that displays beside your icon in Acquaintance lists. For example, you can explain how you’re Busy. To add a Status message, tap the Contacts tab, tap the text box beside your availability, come in/edit the text, and tap Update. (When your Status switches, be sure to switch or delete the message.)
